Choose Your Patch Cord By AWG!
The first thing to remember about wire gauge is its inverse relationship to wire diameter. The smaller the gauge, the larger the diameter of the wire. The larger the diameter of a wire, the less electrical resistance for the signals it carries.
Resistance & Attenuation
A 24AWG patch cord offers less resistance than 26AWG and 28AWG patch cords. Because the 24AWG copper conductor is larger than 26AWG one, it has lower attenuation over length. Thus, 24AWG patch cord is more durable with lower attenuation. On the market, mostly all shielded (STP, FTP, SSTP) patch cords are 26AWG and unshielded cables are 24AWG or 28AWG.
Three Things You Must Notice Before Selection
1. Transmission Speed & Distance
The wire gauge of the Ethernet cable has no relationship with the transmission speed. Typically, patch cord with small gauge (larger diameter) are available in longer lengths because they offer less resistance, and allow signals traveling farther. Therefore, 24AWG or 26AWG patch cord is suitable for longer distance implement while the 28AWG patch cord are preferred for the relatively shorter distances.
2. Spatial Installation & Implement
The smaller conductor 28AWG patch cords have sprung up on the market. Slim patch cords improve airflow in high density data center and can be more easily installed in crowded space compared to 24AWG and 26AWG Ethernet cables.
3. Cabling System Consistence
According to the cabling application to choose the shielded or unshielded solution. If your cabling environment are with STP system, then you should purchase the STP patch cords and vice versa. With the help of cable shielding, it can prevent EMI disturbance and keep a stable connection.
